“Chronic pilot shortage” behind Rex’s recent regional cuts

Rex has revealed a lack of pilot staff as well as other key supply chain issues as two of the may factors behind its recent cuts to regional services.

Starting 1 May, nine routes through regional NSW, Queensland and South Australia will see reductions as well as the suspension of the Mildura-Adelaide service and further alterations nationwide which have not yet been made public.

According the general manager of network strategy, REX, Warwick Lodge, the airline will reinstate the services when the current situation has been stabilised.

“These adjustments are necessitated by the chronic shortage of airline professionals, particularly pilots and engineers, as well as the severe disruption in the supply chain of aircraft and parts,” Lodge said.

“We do understand the impact these adjustments will have on the regional communities affected as Rex is the lifeline for these communities.”

In September 2022, the airline revealed services had returned to monthly profitability, however at this stage also noted issues regarding the operational practices – which have clearly not been resolved.
