Canberra Airport to restart international flights to key Pacific destination

Canberra Airport will kick off international flights for the first time since the pandemic put travel to a halt. Its first stop, Fiji!

Fiji Airways is expected to begin flying directly to the Australian capital as ACT chief minister Andrew Barr and Fijian deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka are poised to make an announcement about the news on Friday.

A media conference has been scheduled, but specific details about the route are yet to be revealed.

The Fijian carrier will use Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for the route which will offer eight business class seats and 162 economy seats.

While many Aussies typically head to Fiji for its lavish holiday options, the airline wants passengers to view this service as a connecting option for long-haul travel to the US and Canada.

Travellers who are currently looking to go between Canberra and Nadi have to stopover in Sydney, which is also available via Fiji Airways.

Australia’s capital is yet to restart international operations since the pandemic. There have been rumblings from Singapore Airlines’ return to Canberra, while Qatar Airways pushed back its service resumption.

Fiji Airways operates a range of Airbus A330, A350 and Boeing 737 in ANZ and will add two new A350s to meet increased demand.

Travel Weekly awaits reply from Canberra Airport and Fiji Airways regarding frequency of flights and a predicted start date.
