Another US shooting – this time it’s in a Texas airport

Portia Odufuwa, a Texas woman has been taken into custody after firing several rounds inside Dallas Love Field Airport.

Odufuwa was then shot by police and taken into custody.

The New York Times reported that there have been no other injuries reported, but the shooting frightened travellers who scrambled for cover following the gunshots. Several flights were delayed following the shooting.

Odufuwa arrived at the airport before 11am on Monday Texas time, according to the Dallas Police Report. She changed her clothes in a restroom and then walked into the ticket counter area of the airport and opened fire at the roof, Chief Eddie Garcia of the Dallas Police Department told a news conference earlier in the week.

Officer Ronald Cronin, a 15-year veteran of DPD, was in the immediate area and engaged the woman, giving verbal commands to drop the weapon. She then pointed her gun at Cronin and a bystander.

Cronin reportedly shot the woman, hitting her “in the lower extremities,” and she was arrested and taken to hospital, Garcia said.

While processing the scene, law enforcement found rounds from Odufuwa’s weapon showing she shot at Cronin.

Twitter user SirMaejor, an activist and actor, wrote that Odufuwa has a history of arrests.

In April last year, Odufuwa falsely reported a fire in Dallas County and in June a judge ruled that she was unable to consult with her lawyer and incompetent to stand trial, according to court records.

Odufuwa was ordered to attend “psychosocial counselling’ by the judge and live-in-house care arranged by a health care provider.

The police report said that the woman’s actions before arriving at the airport are still under investigation – as is a motive for this shooting.

The Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit is investigating the incident. The Dallas County District Attorney also responded and is conducting an independent investigation.
