Tahiti eases travel restrictions as flights resume

The Islands of Tahiti have relaxed entry requirements for international arrivals as Air Tahiti Nui announced that it will restart flights.

The relaxed entry requirements came into place yesterday due to the favourable development of the health situation in Tahiti.

Fully vaccinated travellers to French Polynesia will no longer have to register on the ETIS platform, complete a self-test on arrival, or complete additional tests.

It will be mandatory to perform an antigen test (or RT-PCR) within 24 hours before departure to French Polynesia for all persons over 12 years old.

Unvaccinated travellers will have to complete self-tests on day 2 and 5 after arrival although they will need to have a compelling reason to travel.

While the Islands of Tahiti have technically been open for Australians since mid-2021, the usual route via Auckland has remained closed and travellers have had to travel a much longer route via Hawaii or Los Angeles.

New Zealand plans to open its border to Australia in April meaning a shorter route will soon be available to Aussies.

Air Tahiti Nui General Manager Pacific, Daniel Eggenberger, welcomed a firm date to recommence its New Zealand passenger flight operations.

“It is very exciting to once again be able to share our award-winning service and product with New Zealanders wanting to experience the great destinations we serve from Tahiti and beyond,” Eggenberger said.

Initially, Air Tahiti Nui will offer a weekly flight, with this being extended to three flights a week during the high season commencing 3 July – 9 August with seasonal adjustments after that.

This comes after the national flag carrier originally announced it would restart on 3 July.
