Mildura-Wentworth region seeks support for world-class tourism experience

Australia’s Mildura-Wentworth region will soon play host to a large-scale light installation designed by world-famous artist Bruce Munro.

The installation, Light/State, is expected to throw an international spotlight on the border region, attracting over 800,000 additional visitors and growing its tourism economy by more than $130 million per year.

The installations will highlight the regions distinctive geography, culture and stories across two contrasting locations – one in Mildura, Victoria and one in Wentworth, New South Wales.

Mildura Regional Development, which will launch the exhibition in 2023 in partnership with Pico Play, are on the lookout for expressions of interest from investors, operators and stakeholders to bring this unmissable experience to life.

Drawing inspiration from the region’s breathtaking scenery, Munro, who created Uluru’s world-famous Field of Light installation, designed two contrasting large-scale installations to be experienced over two separate evenings and evoke juxtaposing moods.

The first sculpture is a collision of technology and nature; of light and sound, to create a desert symphony amidst a natural amphitheatre.

The second is a stark contrast using a gentle massed light installation to amplify the quiet beauty of the region’s waterways and encourage meditation and reflection.

As the project gains momentum, Brett Millington, CEO of Mildura Regional Development, said partners were needed to capitalise on this once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver and operate a world-class attraction.

Bruce Monroe’s Field of Light, Uluru exhibition was extended indefinitely

“This is a visionary project, and we are seeking partners of scale who can help us deliver this incredible attraction and bring more visitors to the Mildura-Wentworth region,” Millington said.

Light/State is born from the spirit of co-operation; we have two great states working together to create this wonderful experience for people to visit and enjoy.

“Mildura, Wentworth and the surrounding region has always been a popular tourist destination – its expansive agricultural industry is known as Australia’s food bowl, it has a unique arts scene, is located on the mighty Murray River system and has a cosmopolitan city lifestyle – so Light/State would be the jewel in the crown of this beautiful region.”

Millington is encouraging expressions of interest from both public and private investors seeking a strong financial ROI, operators across the events, tourism and attractions industry to help deliver the installation and key stakeholders across the tourism, government and attractions sectors seeking to bring economic benefits to the region.

All necessary EOI documentation must be submitted by Friday 19 November, and shortlisted parties will be notified in December.
