WA and Queensland announce lockdowns, as the NT extends its own by 72 hours

Lockdown implemented due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Changes to travel restrictions across Australian states and territories are continuing apace, with Western Australia and Queensland the latest to announce lockdowns.

The WA government announced last night that people in the Perth metropolitan area and Peel region would enter a minimum four-day lockdown from 12:01am (AWST) on Tuesday 19 June to limit any potential spread of COVID-19.

The immediate circuit breaker lockdown was introduced “on the best of public health advice due to a fast-evolving situation in Western Australia following a third COVID-19 positive case”, according to a statement by the government.

Meanwhile, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced this morning that from 6pm (AEST) on Tuesday 29 June 2021, a three-day lockdown will be in place for several local government areas.

The affected LGAs are Noosa, the Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Redlands, Moreton Bay, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley, Somerset, Townsville city and Palm Island Aboriginal Shire.

The lockdown is being introduced due to concerns by Queensland health authorities that an unvaccinated hospital worker who tested positive for COVID-19 may have been roaming parts of the state for a week while infectious.

Palaszczuk said the lockdown restrictions will be reviewed on Friday 2 July.

Over in the Northern Territory, the 48-hour lockdown across the Greater Darwin area has been extended for a further 72 hours until 1pm (ACST) on Friday 2 July 2021 so health authorities can work to contain and isolate the spread of COVID-19, while contact tracing is undertaken to identify any additional public exposure sites.

This follows on from one new locally acquired case being recorded in the NT and a number of public exposure sites being identified.
