Carnival Cruise Line extends US pause, as Canadian port closures spark Seabourn, Princess and HAL cancellations

Carnival Corporation has announced its latest spate of cruise pauses and cancellations, this time focusing on North America, Canada and Alaska.

Last week, the company extended its Australian cruise pause with the cancellation of Carnival Cruise Line and P&O voyages through to June.

Now, Carnival Cruise Line has extended its pause in operations from US ports through to 31 May.

“We continue to work on plans to resume operations and are encouraged by the focus to expedite vaccine production and distribution, which are having a demonstrated impact on improving public health,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

“We appreciate the support of all of our guests, employees and trade partners, who we know are looking forward to our return.”

Meanwhile, Seabourn, Princess and Holland America Line have been impacted by the Canadian Transport Ministry’s interim order to close Canadian ports and waters to passenger vessels, with each line extending cruise pauses to Alaska, Canada and the New England.

As a result, Seabourn has cancelled 19 voyages that were scheduled aboard Seabourn Odyssey in summer 2021 between Vancouver, Canada and Juneau, Alaska, including one Pacific Coast voyage at the end of the season.

Holland America Line has cancelled several Alaska, three Canada/New England and two Pacific Coastal cruises in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer and fall of this year.

However, the line said Alaska cruises departing from mid-May and sailing roundtrip from Seattle, Washington are not being cancelled.

Discussions are underway with Canadian and US government authorities to try to find a path forward to preserve these sailings, according to Holland America Line.

Princess Cruises has also cancelled a spate of voyages, including an Alaska seven-day ‘Voyage of the Glaciers’ cruises sailing between Vancouver and Anchorage (Whittier), ‘Pacific Coastals’ that start or end in Vancouver, and its ‘Canadian Adventure’ sailing roundtrip from Southampton in the UK.

The line said it is also engaged with various US and Canadian government officials to try to preserve a portion of the Alaska and Canada/New England 2021 cruise seasons.
