Almost 100 tourists (including Aussies) allegedly breach lockdown rules at Austrian ski resort

Australians are among the almost 100 tourists who were allegedly found to have breached lockdown rules at an Austrian ski resort.

A police raid on 44 accommodations in St Anton am Alberg and Stanzertal over the weekend saw 96 foreigners handed citations and facing fines of up to €2,180 ($3,462), according to SBS.

The tourists were from a number of countries, including Australia, Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Romania, and have been placed in mandatory quarantine.

They are suspected of using loopholes to travel to the resort by registering local addresses or telling authorities they were looking for work.

Austria has introduced strict quarantines and rules on entering the country, in large part to discourage skiers, according to BBC News.

While Austria’s ski slopes remain open for locals, foreigners are not currently permitted.

As a country of fewer than nine million people, Austria has recorded 413,208 cases of COVID-19 and 7,703 deaths so far.

This is the European nation’s third national lockdown since Christmas.
