Indonesian socialite books out entire flight to Bali to avoid COVID-19

An Indonesian socialite has made headlines after seeming to book out an entire flight to Bali to avoid catching COVID-19.

Richard Muljadi, the grandson of pharmaceuticals tycoon Kartini Muljadi, posted a series of stories to his Instagram account in early January, claiming he “booked as many seats as possible” on a flight from Jakarta to Bali.

According to Coconuts Bali, Muljadi explained that he and his wife are “super paranoid” about COVID-19, so they “had to make sure on one else [is on] this flight”.

“We ain’t flying unless it’s just us,” he said.

He posted pictures of the flight’s empty seats, boasting that booking out a commercial flight was still cheaper than chartering a private jet.

The flight Muljadi “chartered” was Batik Air’s ID-6502 flight, but a spokesperson for Lion Air (the owner of Batik) told local media the booking was only for two passengers.

Coconuts Bali has estimated it would have cost Muljadi between $7,000 and $10,000 to book out the entire flight, which had the capacity for 12 business class passengers and 150 economy. That is dirt cheap, if you ask us!
