This resort is using its pool for fish farming until guests return

A resort and spa in southern India has pivoted in a very unusual way to raise extra funds during the global pandemic.

Aveda Resort and Spa in Kumarakom, Kerala has turned its swimming pool into a fish farm to help the property keep afloat while travel is off the cards.

The resort, which has been shut since March, boasts a 7.5 million-litre swimming pool which Aveda’s general manager said has been put to good use.

“We have had zero revenue, so in June, we put around 16,000 two-month-old pearl spot fish in the pool,” Jyotish Surendran told the National UAE.

“We plan to harvest by November and will export to the Middle East.”

Surendran said the four tonnes of pearl spot fish could be worth $40,000 on the market, and while that would not cover the resorts losses, he hopes it will cover some basic bills so Aveda can continue to run until travellers are back on the road.

He also said the hotel plans to keep farming the fish even when the business resumes but not in the pool.

“We can’t continue with this farm in the pool, but we are trying to find alternative land where we can build up this knowledge for bigger projects,” Surendran said.
