Couple builds ‘hot tub trailer’ on wheels during COVID-19 lockdown

While Travel Weekly staff can say hangovers and bad hair are what we’ll be coming out of lockdown with, for one Scottish couple, the fruit of their labour is a towable hot tub made from scratch.

Sammi Miller, 29, and Elliot Roberts, 31, had planned to tour Europe as a couple in their campervan this spring, but the United Kingdom’s coronavirus lockdown – which came into effect at the beginning of April – forced them to rethink their plans.

To keep them occupied in Ediburgh, Scotland, the pair said they spent “about six weeks” working on a homemade hot tub on wheels – which they call the ‘Trailer Hot Tub’ – that they can tow once restrictions lift.

With the project now finished and ready to go, the pair revealed it cost around £500 ($912) and countless hours of work.

“We tried to build this for as little as possible, recycling and utilising materials left over from other projects, things hoarded in garages, donations from friends, other people’s trash, innovating home-made solutions and hard work,” the couple said in a post on their blog.

“The basic materials were an IBC tank, an old fence, a surplus trailer, and some leftover decking. It was difficult to acquire materials via delivery/collection due to the lockdown, so we had to improvise a lot.”

According to the couple, the portable hot tub runs independently of their campervan using a 12-volt battery and gas boiler.

They said they installed a water pump and the tub is large enough to seat four. It also comes with LED lights and bubbles – for added luxury.

“We plan on taking it around Scotland when travel restrictions are relaxed,” the couple said.

“And enjoying a home-made hot tub in the most beautiful locations we can find.”
