Life in the time of COVID-19 with Ocean Farm’s Drew Burrell

Life in the time of COVID-19 with Ocean Farm’s Drew Burrell

This week, we’re taking it easy with the owner of Ocean Farm on NSW’s South Coast, who has quickly developed a talent for roasting chickens.

What are you reading?

I am re-reading books I found on the farm bookshelf. Right now it is White Tiger by Aravind Adiga. Then compulsively checking SMH.com.au and The New York Times.

What are you watching?

Tiger King, because everyone else is (and I see a tiger theme going on here, but I promise it is purely coincidence).

What are you listening to?

Spotify – specifically, the Faithless Radio mix. It brings me back to my happy and carefree days in London in the early 2000s.

What are you cooking?

Tonight, it’s roast chicken. I did one a few weeks ago and impressed my wife so much, as I had never cooked it for her before (to be honest, it was one of my best efforts and I am nervous to do it again).

How are you staying fit both physically and mentally?

Walking at Ocean Farm (we moved here last month and will be here for several more to come, I fear), surfing and by downloading fitness apps … but not yet using them.

What’s the one thing keeping you sane?

My new boy and the idea that my wife and I are having another one soon.

What’s something positive you’ve witnessed or experienced since the coronavirus hit?

People are nodding to each other in greeting. It is a bit grim, but there is a spirit of togetherness.

What have you learned about yourself amid the crisis?

I tell myself to try to not worry about things you cannot control. I have learned that it is easier to think that than do it.

What’s your advice for others in the travel industry on coping with the crisis?

Be flexible. Things are changing daily.
