“Penis fish” wash up on California and South Australia beaches

Marine creatures that have washed up on beaches in the US and Australia have drawn a comparison with male genitalia.

The first case of “penis fish” occurred earlier this month in Northern California, according to multiple media reports.

Much to the shock of beachgoers, thousands of phallus-like creatures ended up on Drakes Beach (which is north of San Francisco) following a recent storm.

It turns out that the “penis fish” found in California are actually fat inkeeper worms or Urechis caupo, which are known for burrowing themselves deep under the sand.

Since then, another marine creature bearing a resemblance to a johnson has been found on a beach in South Australia.

ABC Eyre Peninsula radio presenter Emma Pedler made the rather humorous discovery while strolling along Louth Bay last week with her dog. Check out the video here.

“The dog didn’t see it – I’m glad I wasn’t having to try and chase a dog up the beach with one of those in its mouth,” she told ABC News.

“It was probably from my elbow to my wrist.”

However, an invertebrate expert told ABC News that this particular creature was most likely a species known as Sipunculus robustus.

So, why did Travel Weekly decide to run this story? Well, we don’t really know, other than we thought it might make you giggle a little.
