Pauline Hanson gets stuck climbing Uluru, changes stance on climbing ban

Controversial politician Pauline Hanson is once again in the headlines thanks to her failed attempt at scaling Uluru ahead of the climbing ban in October.

Ahead of tonight’s episode, Nine’s A Current Affair posted a trailer of an exclusive segment about the Uluru climbing ban debate, featuring none other than the One Nation Leader herself.

Not only can Hanson be seen discussing the ban with local Indigenous people as well as one of ACA’s reporters, but she is also shown trying to climb the sacred rock (she was reportedly given permission by traditional owners to do so), before being forced to turn around.

“I’m not going up any further,” she can be heard saying on camera, before adding: “Seriously, I cannot walk down here. My boots are that bloody old.”

For those who don’t remember, Hanson controversially likened the Uluru climbing ban to closing Bondi Beach in a TV interview last month.

Hanson’s comments came not long after recent photos showing hordes of tourists climbing Uluru surfaced online, prompting frustrated responses from Intrepid Travel and a senior custodian of the rock.

Talking to ABC Radio Alice Springs last week, Hanson remarkably altered her stance against the climbing ban, which is due to come into effect on 26 October.

However, it appears the senator’s change of heart is more to do with the safety issues associated with the rock climb, rather than respecting the traditional owners.

“I respect the decision that there is not enough safety in regards to the rock,” she said.

“It’s quite scary – I was surprised. I’d never been out there before … The main issue is security and safety.

“Of course, I respect the decision, but the whole fact is I’m going to try to work with them. If we can find the answers to this, and if we can, I’d like to see the climb opened again.”
