“Saddle class, anyone?”: are Aussie airlines considering stand-up plane seats?

Just when you thought economy class couldn’t get any smaller, the stand-up plane seat is back.

This terrifying concept reared its ugly head once again at the Paris Air Show this week and Twitter is not having it.

“Here’s a fair question. What possessed Aviointeriors to develop this torture chamber? I tried something similar @theAPEXassoc and couldn’t fit into the back row,” Tweeted aviation journalist Kathryn Creedy.

“Now more than ever, we must not forget to ask ourselves “should this exist?”,” quipped Twitter user @AustinTByrd.

This new edition to our nightmares is called the Skyrider 3.0, designed by Aviointeriors, and looks more akin to a bicycle seat than something you’d see on a commercial airline.

Aviation journalist, Tim Jue said on Twitter he is unaware of any carriers who have chosen to use the seat.

“Saddle class anyone? Unaware of any carriers who have gone this route to install a quasi-standing/ sitting seat – but it’s out there if an airline really wants to pack folks in. (You get a mini tray table at least.),” he said.

Jetstar, Tigerair and Virgin Australia have confirmed the airlines have no plans to put passengers through the ordeal.

Qantas is yet to respond to our queries, perhaps because it’s preoccupied with the billboard situation.
