Eiffel Tower evacuated after man climbs Paris monument

The Eiffel Tower was forced to close yesterday after a would-be climber nearly scaled to the top of the monument.

Multiple media reports have said the man, unidentified at time of writing, refused to come down for several hours after climbing the Eiffel Tower without ropes.

Was he bitten by a radioactive spider? Possibly. Is his name Peter Parker? Absolutely not.

But what authorities can confirm is that members of a special firefighter climbing unit and police negotiators eventually persuaded the man to surrender, as reported by ABC News.

Security agents reportedly spotted the man climbing up from the second floor of the Eiffel Tower early in the afternoon, forcing the evacuation of 2500 visitors on the monument, SETE (the tower management company) said in a statement.

The man eventually stopped his climb just below the third level – the highest level of the 324-metre-tall tower – and remained there.

His motives for climbing the Eiffel Tower remain unclear.

Officials said the man was “under control and out of danger” on Monday night (local time), with the Eiffel Tower, which is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year, due to reopen today.

The tower has reportedly been a regular target for free-climbers ever since the “French Spider-Man”, world-famous French urban climber Alain Robert, scaled it without any technical climbing gear in the mid-1990s.
