Carnival cruise ship rescues dozens of people adrift at sea

Nassau, Bahamas - April 08, 2013: Carnival Fantasy and Disney Dream cruise ships are docked at Nassau Bahamas cruise terminal. You can see people on the pier.

A Carnival cruise ship has assisted in the rescue of more than 20 people adrift in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Carnival Fantasy was reportedly en route from Cozumel, Mexico to Mobile, Alabama when it received a distress call on behalf of the US Coast Guard.

The sports fishing vessel was stranded about 130 nautical miles from Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It had reportedly been adrift for three days.

Video of the rescue taken by passengers on board the vessel was re-tweeted by NBC after the event unfolded.

According to the Coast Guard, nearly all of the people on board the sports fisher boat were rescued from a smaller wooden boat which was sailing from Cuba to Mexico.

The smaller boat had lost power and was also adrift for three days, with 22 people out of 23 adrift for a total of six days between the two different vessels.

After discovering the vessel at around 8:40am on Sunday local time, the US Coast Guard sent a distress call for assistance to anyone nearby to provide help.

The Carnival Fantasy heard the Coast Guard’s distress call and arrived on the scene at 10:47am, according to a company statement.

“Carnival Cruise Line has a longstanding policy of assisting distressed mariners at sea,” the company said.

All 23 people on board the stranded vessel were brought aboard the Carnival Fantasy. Two of those rescued were treated by medical staff for minor issues.
