Hotel review: Vomo Island Resort

Read at your own peril: This review may make the prospect of continuing your day without immediately booking flights to Fiji unbearable.

First impression

There is only one way to arrive at Vomo and that’s by air. Seaplane or chopper are the options, most opt for the chopper. A one-way helicopter transfer is around $365 per adult but heck it’s worth every cent… and that’s saying something given the journey takes just 12 minutes from Denarau to Vomo. However, the views are phenomenal as you fly over coral reefs, turquoise waters and picture-perfect islands. Finally, Vomo comes into view and you feel every bit of the celeb.

Vomo Island Resort itself is situated on its own emerald-like private island surrounded by sapphire waters. From the helipad guests are whisked off the resort’s reception where staff greet them with song, smiles and heart-warming yells of “Bula!”.

Location

Vomo Island Fiji is a privately owned 87-hectare island located in the Mamanuca Island group of Fiji, on the cusp of the Yasawa Islands. There are no other resorts on Vomo, so guests have the entire island to explore, play and relax.

Soft sands fringe Vomo and drift into the clear waters, which then give way to Vomo Lailai, a smaller uninhabited island with jaw-dropping volcanic cliffs and desolate beaches – perfect for castaway couples and families to enjoy a picnic on.

Both of these stunning islands are surrounded by tranquil, turquoise waters that just beg to be explored. Add to this the picture-perfect palm tree lined sandy beaches and the endless blue skies and you have all the ingredients for the perfect island getaway

The rooms

The resort is boutique and high end with less than 30 rooms and a handful of residences (aka villas) that are stunning, both to the eye and on the wallet.

The rooms, which most mere mortals stay in, are beautifully styled and arguably the most design orientated accommodation your clients will find in Fiji. The bathrooms are sumptuous, almost as large as the main room and feature deep stand-alone baths. One interesting point is that the rooms don’t have a TV in them – a delight in this reviewer’s mind to disconnect a little.

Drinking and dining: 10/10

Vomo isn’t the cheapest property in Fiji and so clients can be initially taken aback by the rates. However, a stay here is full board. Breakfast, lunch and dinner (all three-course, of course) are included. As are soft drinks – just don’t tell the kids otherwise they’ll cotton onto an endless supply of sugary drinks. Meals are to a very high standard for Fijian standard, but the destination does still have a little to go before it can boast about itself as a culinary hotbed.

The newest addition to Vomo is the Rocks Bar & Restaurant. For adults, it’s a must at sundown. Whether that means depositing the kids at the excellent kids club for a couple of hours, or for couples seeking one too many ginger mojitos, there’s no better place to be in the evening due to the stunning views over to Little Vomo.

Hotel features

Vomo is very popular with families wanting an upmarket retreat. The kids club is free and is excellent at keeping the little ones, and bigger ones entertained with programs catering to different age groups.

Free snorkelling excursions depart daily, there is also a pitch and put golf course, plus a wonderful walk up Mount Vomo that affords yet more tremendous views. The styling throughout the property is second to none.

Verdict: 9/10

Vomo is without a shadow of a doubt one of Fiji’s top resorts and the comparison set is limited to a handful of rivals. However, with the addition of the Rocks Bar & Restaurant adults only area Vomo now plays in the unique space of offering a top-class adults-only experience as well as market-leading family holiday facilities. The budget might put off some, but the value for money shouldn’t.

All in all, highly recommended.
