Air New Zealand removes “cheeseball” safety rap video following wave of criticism

Air New Zealand removes “cheeseball” safety rap video following wave of criticism

It’s been heavily skewered from various corners of the globe, and now Air New Zealand’s safety rap video has spat its last rhyme.

The airline has removed the video from all flights from today, explaining its decision was based on a new campaign to stimulate domestic travel and promote tourism to Northland, according to the New Zealand Herald.

A passenger on board an Air New Zealand flight also revealed the move on social media yesterday.

The video stars well-known Kiwi actor Julian Dennison and local musicians Kings, Theia and Randa, who rap about plane safety to the tunes of Run DMC and Sisters Underground.

Since its unveiling in November last year, the video has copped a lot of criticism from well-known music artists Anderson .Paak and Denzel Curry, along with the tour manager for actor/rapper Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) and Kiwi politician Shane Jones.

Furthermore, a New Zealand Herald entertainment editor urged Air New Zealand to pull the “cheeseball” video in a column published earlier this week for the sake of the artists involved.

It’s understood that Air New Zealand is replacing the video with an old safety clip from 2016 starring Rachel Hunter.

Travel Weekly has contacted Air New Zealand for comment.
