Tree fall at popular NZ tourist attraction leaves five injured, two critical

Queenstown’s Shotover Jet has closed its doors until further notice after a tree fall at its base injured five people, including a family of four.

Shotover Jet, which is run by Ngāi Tahu Tourism confirmed yesterday on social media that a tree had fallen on public conservation land near its set-up.

“Five people, including a family of four, were injured whilst sitting under the tree at the time it fell,” a statement by the company said.

“They were assessed by emergency services on site. All were conscious and have been taken to hospital for further assessment.

“We are continuing to provide support to all those affected and their whānau. Our thoughts are with those who have been injured and those affected by this event.

“We are also supporting our team who were understandably shaken by today’s event. We’d like to thank the police, the emergency services and also our team for their quick response.”

Shotover Jet has remained closed since the incident, but said it hopes to re-open on Thursday.

A St John spokesman told media that three helicopters and a number of ambulances attended the scene, and that two of the five people – believed to be a boy and his mother – were in a critical condition.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 1pm on Tuesday, and the injured family were from overseas, according to police.
