Wild weather causes almost 100 cancellations at Sydney Airport

Rainy day view on Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Passengers are facing delays and cancellations at Sydney Airport this morning as intense rain and flooding cause huge disruptions to flights.

The airport has been running on a single runway since 7am due to lightning in the area and winds reaching 70km/h, a spokeswoman told Fairfax.

Delays and cancellations have been occurring across both the international and domestic terminals, with domestic appearing to be the most affected.

This comes just four days after strong winds left thousands in the lurch at Sydney airport, with massive delays also affecting both terminals.

The airport has released warnings on their website urging passengers to contact their airline for up-to-date flight information or to register for flight updates by messaging flight numbers to the flysyd Facebook and Twitter pages.

According to the Guardian, almost 100 flights have been cancelled so far and more cancellations are expected.

“People need to check with their airlines before they come to the airport. The airlines are the ones that make decisions about delays,” a spokeswoman told News Corp.

The spokeswoman also said passengers can expect 15-20 minute delays disembarking from planes if lightening persists.

Virgin, Qantas, Jetstar and Tiger Air have all Tweeted about the storm, asking passengers to check their flight status for the latest information.

Sydney was pummelled with more than one month’s worth of rain between 5:30 am and 7am, and parts of the city are expected to cop up to 200mm, the most rain a single day has seen in three years, as per the Guardian.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for intense rain and vigorous winds, extended to parts of the Hunter, mid-north coast and central tablelands.
