Monaco gracing the Australian stage: Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo announce debut visit to Australia in 2019
Monaco’s prestigious Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo is set to bring the glamour of Monaco down under with the troupe’s visit to Australia performing an innovative version of Swan Lake, “LAC”, choreography by Jean-Christophe Maillot, as revealed by the Australian Ballet when announcing their 2019 season earlier this week.
Dubbed a highlight of the 2019 season, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo will perform in Melbourne from 27 June to 6 July 2019, presenting a sensuous, sinister twist on the Swan Lake story.
Jean-Christophe Maillot, choreographer-director of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, created a blend of neo-classical ballet and modern dance with LAC signalling its departure from tradition and its plunge into the depths of the psyche.
In collaboration with the writer Jean Rouaud, Maillot revives the torments of a story with a direct connection to our childhood fears and nightmares. These buried experiences are resurrected and combined against a Machiavellian, family backdrop used to present a ballet of contrasts.
