EXCLUSIVE Q&A with Barry Mayo: “We want to make sure our PTMs are genuinely happy”
Excuse us, but the TravelManagers annual national conference in Oahu Hawaii is almost here! Just two weeks to go people.
So get ready for a HUGE weekend full of great activities, important industry insights and the chance to catch up with your Personal Travel Manager (PTM) family!
To find out more about what PTMs and other industry folk can expect at the conference, we had a chat with TravelManager’s chairman, Barry Mayo to bring you this exclusive Q&A.
Travel Weekly: Why do you think it’s important for TravelManagers to hold their annual conferences?
Barry Mayo: Our people work hard all year, and whilst our PTMs mostly work independently within their own businesses, they also appreciate the importance of building strong relationships with their colleagues and with the team at the National Partnership Office (NPO).
Our annual National Conference is a great opportunity for everyone to reconnect with people in other states they haven’t seen since the previous year’s conference – which is one of the reasons that we always have such strong attendance.
We place great emphasis on fostering a culture that celebrates each other’s successes and taps into the knowledge, experience and talent that exists within the company. Our conference is a great environment in which to nurture that spirit – we celebrate the achievements of the past year, we learn from each other and we have a lot of fun in the process.
TW: What will the main focus of this year’s conference be?
BM: Success is all about balance and being at one’s best: it applies not just to the financial success of the business but also to the wellbeing of our people.
We care about our PTM network and the NPO team and we want to ensure that they are genuinely happy in their careers, which is why we are committed to providing opportunities for them to grow professionally and personally, as well as offering whatever support they need to achieve balance between their work lives and their personal lives.
This will be an important topic at this year’s conference.
TW: What can attendees look forward to this year?
BM: This year’s conference is set in “The Heart of Hawai’i”, Oahu, which in local culture means “The Gathering Place”. Every one of our PTMs has a different reason for making the investment in time and money to attend the conference, but we’re quite certain that this year’s location will be one of the highlights.
We are very excited to have Turia Pitt as one of our two keynote speakers this year – she is one of Australia’s most admired and widely recognised motivational speakers, and her story of resilience will astonish, inspire and motivate everyone who hears her speak.
The conference will also feature presentations from six PTMs who will be sharing the ‘Secrets of their Success’ and are also pre- and post-conference activities planned, including a golf tournament at Hawaii Prince Golf Course and a selection of famils to all four main islands.
As always, we have a few surprises in store too!
TW: What does this year’s theme “Success” mean to you? Why has it been chosen for this year?
The theme of ‘Success’ has many applications, including finding work/life balance, belonging to a network of like-minded colleagues, and achieving personal fulfilment and financial success for doing what we love.
Over time we have refined our conference content and structure by listening to our network and our partner suppliers to deliver a successful event.
We’re confident that this year will deliver success on many different levels, whether it be to inspire delegates, including our partner suppliers, to take their business to another level, encourage them to find new techniques for greater work/life balance, learn from one another in the great spirit of sharing our network has created or simply enjoy some time out in this beautiful part of the world.
