FLIGHTS CANCELLED: Mount Agung is at it again

Multiple flights between Australia and Bali have been cancelled after Mount Agung volcano purged water vapour and ash two kilometres into the air.

Qantas has released a statement this morning saying the eruption means it is currently not safe to operate flights to and from Depansar Airport.

“Denpasar Airport is currently closed and we are monitoring the advice from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre and our team of senior pilots and meteorologists will make an assessment when flights can be resumed,” the airline said.

“We will continue to provide customers with updates as the situation develops and contact them via email or SMS if their flight is affected.

While these disruptions are frustrating, we always put safety first.”

The airline added that customers booked to travel to Bali over the coming days should check their flight status on the Qantas website for the most up to date information.

The ABC reports AirAsia has also cancelled a number of flights between Australia and Bali, amid “fears the ash could affect the aircraft engines.”

Denpasar airport said 26 international inbound and outbound flights have been cancelled, affecting nearly 5,000 travellers. In addition, 10 Domestic flights were also cancelled, affecting more than 1,000 people, as per the ABC.

Darwin based volcanic ash advisory issued an orange aviation code, referencing continuous ash emissions from Mt Agung, adding that winds may carry the ash southwest towards Bali’s international airport and Java.
