Hands on Journeys’ first Fiji empowerment tour success
Empowerment tourism company Hands on Journeys’ first tour to Fiji has been deemed a great success after returning last week.
Leading the inaugural tour, HOJ Founder Simla Sooboodoo, said that it just shows how it only takes one person with a vision to get a community moving in the right direction.
“Many people go to Fiji not realising that there is so much more to experience than island hopping or enjoying the lavish swimming pools in Denarau. Launching a tour in Fiji, we wanted to create something that’s authentic, that will allow travellers to experience the rhythms of native life and emulate the contagious Fijian smiles on our travellers’ faces”, said Sooboodoo.
A percentage of funds from the tour is put towards sustainable projects that enabled the Chief of the village to hire 15 locals who came together to deliver an authentic cooking class and cultural day tour for the very first time to a group of travellers.
The new tour offers five days and four nights and allows travellers time with local communities and showcases a day in the life of Fijians. The inaugural tour visited beautiful Tivua Island thanks to Captain Cook Cruises, spent time lying on the white sand beaches, canoeing and snorkelling, eating fabulous seafood, downing some kava, and dancing and swaying to traditional tunes.
Established in 2015, Hands on Journeys currently runs empowerment tourism tours to Cambodia, Vietnam and India, Cairns and now Fiji.

The once-a-year occurrence of the Geminids Meteor Shower is part of a 9-day Morocco Tour with On The Go Tours departing from Marrakech on 10th December.

Combining Sri Lanka and the Maldives
ONLY four months into 2018 and the Beyond Travel Group subsidiary Sri Lanka & Beyond is noticing the first holiday trend of year emerging.
Rather than just visiting one country when jetting away for an international adventure travellers are exploring two countries with this trend particularly popular among those bound for Sri Lanka who are making side trips to the Maldives.
“We knew Sri Lanka was going to be one of 2018’s hottest destination, and the Maldives is always popular for those seeking a decadent stop-and-flop vacation, but we didn’t expect so many customers would be keen to combine the two,” says Sri Lanka & Beyond general manager sales and marketing Bryce Crampton.
“But given the air links, improving infrastructure, unique experiences, magnificent cuisine, and destination hotels in both Indian Ocean locations it’s no surprise people are incorporating Sri Lanka and the Maldives when they find time to head away on holiday.”
“Those looking to savour the Maldives – after hearing about the idyllic location for so many years – are embarking on our Taste of Sri Lanka & the Maldives itinerary which is a private 10-day tour that includes a relaxing stay on an exclusive Indian Ocean atoll.”
The destination experts at Sri Lanka & Beyond are also crafting bespoke itineraries taking in Sir Lanka and the Maldives, or India for those keen to jet north to the Subcontinent, with these combination tours allowing travellers to experience the enigmatic destinations for a unique perspective.
