Thousands stranded as Air France strikes continue

Paris, France - April 28, 2017: Air France Boeing 777-300ER at Charles de Gaulle Airport. Air France was the launch customer of Boeing 777-300ER

Right now might not be the best time to travel to France.

Yep, they’re at it again with their strikes.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s economic reforms seem to be upsetting a lot of people, with most French trains already stopped due to strikes, and now Air France has cancelled a number of services.

30 per cent of its flights, to be exact.

The strike is affecting domestic and international travel on around a quarter of the flights at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports, reports the Independent.

Passengers are being urged to check the status of their flights before arriving at the airport, and the airline is offering to change tickets for free.

This is Air France’s fifth strike since February and unions have announced this week that more strikes will take place this month.

The union wants a 6 per cent pay rise after years of stagnant wages but the airline is offering only one per cent, claiming anything more will hurt share prices, as per the Independent.

Meanwhile, train strikes are set to intensify this weekend with the national railway SNCF announcing 80 per cent of high-speed trains and two-thirds of regional will be cancelled following another two-day walk out.

According to the Independent, neither the French government or the unions look to be giving in any times soon, despite continuing negotiations.
