Jetstar confuses two NZ cities in major social media blunder

Poor New Zealand, so often known as simply Australia’s neighbour, when really, the country deserves so much more praise than we give it.

And we fear the latest blunder from Jetstar will only make things worse, as the airline posted an image of one of its planes flying over Canterbury in the country’s south.

While our New Zealand colleague tells us Canterbury is a beautiful city, sadly it was not the city pictured in Jetstar’s Instagram post.

The image was shared over the airline’s Instagram account and read “There’s something about flying over NZ that we can’t get over, especially when you’re flying home. This stunning photo from @divyeshbhaven over Canterbury”.

The post was soon taken down, though not before the airline felt the wrath of angry Instagram users.

Comments on the image ranged from: “Dis not Canterbury, Hon”.

To the more fired up: “Chch is HEAPs more coastal than I remember…”.

And our personal favourite: “No wonder your timekeeping is so poor, you have no idea where your planes are”.

We truly applaud the levels of sass.

The post went up late on Wednesday evening on the Australian company’s official New Zealand Facebook page as well, that has 136,000 likes.

The airline quickly apologised for the mistake and even released a statement to remedy the situation.

“The photo is obviously of stunning Wellington so we’ve corrected it,” Jetstar corporate communications manager NZ Phil Boeyen said.

“We’ll follow up on the ‘capital not Canterbury’ error with our Auckland-based team who posted the image.”

Whoops.
