Regional Aussie airport set to become international

Perth, Western Australia, Australia - November 2, 2010: AirAsia X flying over Perth sky with logo on a plane's wing. AirAsia was named by World Travel Award 2014 as Asia's Leading Low Cost Airline.

Victoria might soon be home to two international airports, as Avalon Airport has inked a partnership with AirAsia.

The deal will see AirAsia operating out of the regional airport, meaning it would be Avalon’s first overseas service.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Avalon and AirAsia will announce on the timetable this coming Sunday.

The service will mean direct flights from Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, to the regional town.

The flight could be operating as early as late 2018, which will lead to a huge influx of Malaysian tourists to Victoria.

More details are expected to come to light on Sunday during an event at Lara Airport, which is own by logistics company Linfox Group.

In June of 2015, Jetstar secured a deal with Avalon Airport, which introduced a daily service between Avalon Airport and Gold Coast.

The deal between the state government and Jetstar secured the future of the airport for the next 10 years, according to industry minister Lily D’Ambrosio at the time.

As part of the contract, Jetstar also increased the number of flights from five to seven a day and fly to two new domestic destinations.

More to come.
