What not to name your Wi-Fi network

What not to name your Wi-Fi network

Let this be a lesson in Wi-Fi names – they shouldn’t cause a plane to be grounded.

By grounded, we mean land early, and by land early we mean a long delay for a bunch of grumpy passengers. Seriously.

The Turkish Airlines flight Nairobi, Kenya to Istanbul, Turkey was suddenly diverted, after a Wi-Fi network with the name “bomb on board” sparked concern among passengers.

The plane landed at Khartoum airport, Sudan and was later resumed after a security check of all passengers and the aircraft was carried out. So basically the most un-funny Wi-Fi name in history caused 100 passengers serious travel delays.

In a statement, Turkish Airlines said that someone from the plane had created the network name.

“Experts said the Wi-Fi network in question was created on board.

“No irregularities were seen after security procedures were carried out, and passengers were brought back on the plane once boarding restarted,” they said.

What they didn’t mention is who made the ridiculous Wi-Fi network in the first place – or if they were caught.

And this isn’t even the first time something like this has happened.

A Wi-Fi hotspot with the name “Jihadist Cell London 1” was found onboard a flight from Cancun to London in May and was investigated after a passenger alerted the crew.

And just last year, a Qantas flight had almost taken off from Melbourne to Perth when a passenger noticed the Wi-Fi network name “Mobile Detonation Device” – causing the flight to be delayed for a further two hours.

And whilst all passengers and airline staff are fine, the Wi-Fi network names are not.
