The top twenty cities for families were announced after hundreds of parents had their say on what makes a city great for raising a family. They were scaled according to factors like maternity laws, affordability and happiness.

Surprise surprise, the Scandinavian cities took out the top five, with Copenhagen, Denmark being crowned number one. It is one of the safest, happiest cities in the world, with affordable housing and excellent maternity/paternity laws, with an overall score of 8.64.

Thirteen of out of the top twenty best cities for families are in Europe, with three of them Canadian cities, three Australian and one from New Zealand making up the remainder.

The brains behind the study (besides the parents) is the online real estate portal for home buyers and sellers Homeday, who commissioned this study in order to help potential property buyers and sellers make data-led decisions.

The factors to determine the best city were chosen based on what parents confirmed were important when choosing a city to settle in, and give an overview of the best cities for young families to both live and visit around the world.
