Tourists given 15 minutes to flee Typhoon Damrey

British tourists in Vietnam’s popular city Hoi An were advised to flee their accommodation immediately as devastating Typhoon Damrey travelled towards them.

Damrey has already killed 27 people in the region, and 22 more have been declared missing.

Travellers in the tourist hot spot were given a warning to exit their hotels after flooding from Damrey became “more serious”.

As per The Mirror UK, footage from the ancient town shows the roads completely flooded and properties submerged.

One tourist said of the evacuation, “At first we were given 30 minutes to get out. Later it got more serious and they said we had 15 minutes.”

Photos of Hoi An uploaded online feature locals and tourists travelling through the streets by boats, as half a metre of water has flooded local businesses.

Damrey has battered the coast of Vietnam, leaving floods, damaged houses and debris in its wake.

It has damaged more than 40,000 homes, knocked down electricity poles, and uprooted trees.

The country’s steering committee for disaster prevention said 626 houses had collapsed entirely in a trail of destruction that has forced the evacuation of more than 30,000 people.

The coastal city of Nha Trang has been the worst affected in the storm, recording winds of up to 127 km per hour.

Nha Trang is also just a 10 hour drive from Da Nang, the city where dozens of world leaders are scheduled to fly into for the Apec Summit later this week.

According to The Sun, a gateway proclaiming “Welcome to Danang” collapsed in the storm with the city due to hos the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit this week.

The national disaster agency forecast that rain would last until Tuesday and that flooding could worsen.
