Would you stay in a sand hostel?

In a world-first, a hostel sculptured entirely from sand will open on the Gold Coast this week.

Yes you read that correctly, the world’s first sand hostel has been built, carving on the sandy shores of Kurrawa Terrace in Broadbeach. The hostel, made from a whopping 24 tonnes of sand, and towering four meters tall will be open to the public for three days only.

From 20 – 22 September guests can choose from two exclusive accommodation spaces; an eight-bed dorm or one private double room, with prices going for as little as $7.50.

The public will also be invited to participate in the three-day event from 12 pm Wednesday to 2 pm Friday, with the hostel hosting a variety of food, drinks, live music and activities such as beach volleyball, yoga and sand sculpturing lessons.

The craftsmanship behind the impressive structure is Jon Dowding and Denis Masoud. Jon is a production designer whose feature film achievements include Mad Max and The Blue Lagoon, and Denis is a renowned world champion sand sculptor.

The project is a joint venture between online hostel-booking platform Hostelworld and Gold Coast Tourism, who teamed up with global creative agency Lively Worldwide to create the world’s first Sand Hostel on the Gold Coast.

The activation aims to challenge the perception of hostels, build awareness of the Hostelworld brand Down Under and showcase the Gold Coast as a top travel destination for millennials.

“The Sand Hostel came about as both ourselves and the Gold Coast wanted to create something that had never been done before, that people could truly engage with and as such take away unforgettable memories from,” said Hostelworld Head of Acquisition Niall Walsh.

“We’ve worked with a number of exceptionally talented people to bring this to life and we believe it does an incredible job of both showcasing the modern hostelling experience whilst also highlighting the incredible things the Gold Coast has to offer to young travellers who want to explore Australia.”
