Airline asks flighties to take pregnancy test before hire

Holding positive pregnancy test.

Iberia, Spain’s national airline has come under fire for asking women who are applying for jobs to take a pregnancy test.

Women applying for a job with Spain’s national airline, Iberia, have been asked an unusual request, one that has offended many an applicant.

Part of the application process asks women to take a pregnancy test.

But what may be worse is that Iberia have defended the requirement, saying  they only implemented the procedure to, according to El Pais, “avoid assigning them a task that would put their pregnancy at risk”.

Hmm, sounds dodgy to us…

It’s not clear how this practice works in the best interests of their female employees, as surely we can all assume women are capable of determining what tasks are risky or not themselves.

Authorities in the Balearic Islands have since put a stop to Iberia’s practice, and the airline have since been fined 25,000 euros.

Female job applicants will no longer be required to take a pregnancy test.
