Australian travellers are largely planning travel over the Winter months, and have become one of the most active international travellers in the world to enjoy the global Summer season.

Trivago.com.au has extensively analysed Australian travel search trends for Summer escapes to give insight into the nation’s travel behaviour, top destinations and the intended amount of time and money travellers are willing to spend.

Australian travellers have dominated international tourism in several countries across the world and are the seventh highest spending nationality in the world for the travel period, despite being one of the nationalities that travel the longest to the most popular destinations.

Topping Tourism Around The World

  • Australian travellers are shaping up to be the largest international tourism market to Indonesia, Singapore, New Zealand.
  • In the UK and Malaysia, Australian travellers are the second largest international tourism market during this travel period.
  • Based on search data, tourism in Indonesia over the Australian Wintertime is currently looking heavily dependent on travellers from Australia who are making up 77 per cent of searches.
  • In Singapore, Australian travellers constitutes 32 per cent of international tourism, and a whopping 98 per centin New Zealand during the travel period.
  • In the US, Australian travellers make up eight per cent of tourism and are the fifth largest international tourism market.

Queenstown to be Overrun with Australians 

  • Australians are accounting for 98 per cent of international inbound tourism to New Zealand between June 1 and August 31, 2017.
  • Queenstown is the seventh most popular destination to visit this season, with Australian travellers staying for an average of 6.8 nights.

Average Spend and Duration of Holiday

  • City-hopping is a transpiring trend in Australian travel behaviours as more US and European destinations rise in popularity as well as the duration of stay in any one destination.
  • This year travellers have an overall average clicked price of $278 across international destinations and a duration of stay at 6.1 nights at a time.
  • In Europe, Australian travellers are looking to spend an average of 4.4 nights in a destination. The average clicked price for Australian travellers across Europe is AUD $300 a night.
  • Growing interest in the Greek islands and regions in Southern Italy account for the heightened average clicked price this year.
  • In Asia, Australian travellers are looking to spend around AUD $285 a night for an average of 6.2 nights over the travel period.
  • In the US, Australian travellers are willing to spend an average of AUD $404 a night for around 6 nights at each destination.

London on Top

  • Following the Germans, Australians are the second largest tourism market for the UK this Summer, making up for 8% of tourism to the UK this summer.
  • The top two destinations are London and Edinburgh, with a whopping 92% of searches between the two cities for London.

Greek Islands Infatuation

  • The biggest trends for Australian travellers heading to Europe is an experience on the Greek Islands, with four Greek destinations making the list.
  • Mykonos is the most expensive, with the average clicked price for Australian travellers being AUD $454 a night.

Paris Continues to Fall for USA

  • It’s fell from fourth in 2015 behind Bali, London and Singapore, and then to fifth in 2016 after travel interest to New York exploded in Australia.
