Croc Hunting to Boost NT Tourism?

Australian Crocodile in Sydney, Australia

Crocodile hunting would be good for Northern Territory Tourism, according to Bob Katter’s Australian Party.

The NT News reports that NT international crocodile scientist Professor Graham Webb said that regulated tourism based crocodile hunting will open a new tourist market to the northern territory.

“With the right approvals crocodile hunting could legally start in the Territory tomorrow,” Webb told NT News.

“We have people doing it now illegally … there’s a black market now. We know it is happening on the Adelaide River where crocodile egg numbers are way down. Queensland and the Northern Territory could collaborate to come up with a workable model that is safe and well regulated.”

The Katter Party based in Queensland is currently drafting legislation on crocodile hunting, despite the Queensland government saying they will not support it.

Environment Minister Steven Miles told NT News that crocodile culling will not fix risks they cause to humans.

“It would give the public a false sense of safety, leading to complacency and an increased risk of attacks,” Miles said.

“No matter how many crocodiles are removed, no waterway in crocodile country can ever be considered to be crocodile free. Even when almost hunted to extinction, crocodile attacks still occurred.”

Webb said that crocodile hunting will not be about wholesale culling if regulated.

“There are landowners who are losing a lot of stock but if you allow people to hunt the crocodiles doing it, the crocodile will have a financial return back to the landowner,” Webb said.

The Katter Party’s draft legislation is expected to be released in May.
