The secret formula for travel happiness

Today is International Day of Happiness today, and so Jetstar have revealed the formula for planning the ultimate happy holiday.

And yes, travel – unsurprisingly – is up there with the list of things that make us happy. Cheers to you guys!

To celebrate the happiness-boosting benefits of travel, Jetstar have compiled the formula for the ultimate trip. The formula was calculated by determining the preferences of the WHO + WHAT + WHEN + WHERE + HOW for Australians when it comes to holiday happiness.

The results from the research are in and the winning formula is as follows: Travel by plane (82%) to a beach holiday (48%) in the warm sunshine (67%) where you stay in a hotel (68%) with your partner (53%) for two weeks (32%).

Destination: Bali or Hawaii
Type: Beach holiday (48%)
Weather: Warm with sunshine (67%)
Length: Two weeks (32%)
Travel with: Partner (53%)
Transport: Plane (82%)
Accommodation: Hotel (68%)

A survey of holiday-goers shows contentment kicks in from the moment a trip is planned, with a quarter of travellers (25%) saying their happiest holiday moment is booking a flight, even more than arriving at their destination (16%).

“Travel brings us three stages of happiness; anticipatory excitement when booking and planning a holiday; experience happiness when we’re switched off and enjoying the holiday; and when it’s all over we experience positive reminiscing for up to several months or even years,”  Psychologist Dr. Tim Sharp, Australia’s very own ‘Dr. Happy’, explained.

For a nation of beach bums, it’s no surprise that a beach holiday is most likely to bring Australians a sense of wellbeing (48%) followed by a cultural holiday (22%). Pair this with plenty of warm sunshine (favoured by 67%) and you’re on your way to a happy trip.

The ideal holiday length for Aussie travellers is two weeks (32%), followed by a month (19%) or more (24%). More than half (53%) of travellers ranked their partners as their number one travel companion, followed by children and partner (18%) whilst travelling with friends and travelling solo ranked an equal 9% each.
