Footage emerges of Seabourn Encore crash

A cruise ship has gone rogue in New Zealand, coming loose from its moorings and colliding with another vessel in the port of Timaru.

Luxury cruise ship Seabourn Encore – which could potentially  be the most beautiful ship at sea – crashed into the Milburn Carrier II, a much smaller vessel by comparison.

Seabourn only made its inaugural arrival into Sydney earlier this month, after being christened in Singapore, making it the youngest ship to ever cruise into Sydney’s harbour.

A woman at the port managed to capture the entire episode on her phone, claiming “Oh, this is not good” as the ship starts to drift in the wind and break free from its moorings.

“I can’t stop shaking… he’s going to hit that Milburn, oh my God!” she continues.

Following the incident, Harbour master Jim Dilley told Radio New Zealand, “There were mooring issues with the ship and a strong southerly wind blew it away from the wharf.”

Both ships reportedly suffered damage from the clash, although none of the 600+ passengers or crew onboard were injured.

The New Zealand Transport Accident Commission has now launched an inquiry.

During her two-month season down under, Seabourn Encore is scheduled to offer two 16-day itineraries between Sydney and Auckland and a 16-day voyage from Sydney to Bali via the Queensland coast.

But the collision didn’t impact its itinerary, and Seabourn confirmed the ship was cleared following an inspection, ready to continue on to its next port in Akaroa, NZ.
