Tigerair roars to life: granted four-days to fly stranded Aussies home

The future of the budget-carrier’s Bali operations remain uncertain, as well as what happens to passengers affected after special provisions lift on Monday.

Late yesterday The Indonesian Government granted Tigerair Australia permission to operate flights from Bali to Australia until Monday, but it is uncertain on provisions for stranded passengers booked to return home after 16 January.

“Tigerair Australia has not been granted any further permissions at this stage. We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused,” the airline said.

Meanwhile, the future for the budget airline’s foray into Indonesia remains uncertain, with all outgoing services until January 20 cancelled. The airline is reportedly “exploring a number of options” to resume operations.

“Flights Australia to Bali from Saturday 21 January onwards are under review,” the airline said in a statement, per an ABC report.

More than 1700 travellers have been affected so far, according to various news reports, but the airline is expected to bring around 2000 customers back to Australia over the four-day period on Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

“After consultation with the Indonesian Government, Tigerair Australia has been granted permission to operate flights from Bali to Australia until Monday 16 January 2017 to enable Australians who are currently in Bali to return home,” the airline said in a statement, as per a report on news.com.au.

Flights commenced today from Bali to Melbourne and Perth, with Adelaide services commencing as schedule from Bali tomorrow. Parent company Virgin Australia yesterday put on additional flights from Bali to ease the number of stranded passengers.

The budget carrier has allegedly breached Indonesian Government aviation regulations relating to licencing and ticketing conditions, resulting in Indonesia’s department of transport grounding the airline from operating services between Bali and Australia on Wednesday.

“Tigerair Australia continues to work constructively with the Indonesian Government in order to recommence normal operations to Bali,” the airline said.
