Aussies preparing to hit New Zealand’s slopes this winter

Last year’s fantastic snow conditions reinforced New Zealand’s stellar reputation as a prime skiing and winter holiday destination.

So it’s no surprise that it’s been predicted that more Australians will be flocking there this year than ever before.

In fact, our latest research projects that New Zealand will be Australia’s number one holiday destination for the winter season. The predictions estimate that upwards of 300,000 Aussies will hit the slopes in NZ this year. Last year’s winter saw a 5.7 percent increase in short-term departures to New Zealand from the year before, so we can predict a similar increase this June-August period too.

But where specifically are they going?

Of course, Auckland is the most popular place for Australians to visit in general, probably because of the major airport connection. But Queenstown is actually the most popular ski town, and the second-most flown-to city between the June-August period last year, according to the analysis of Tourism New Zealand data.

It’s important to understand the perks and reasons Australians choose to visit these specific locations. This not only contributes to the peace of mind of travellers but also provides them with positive reinforcement, encouraging them to come back again.

What Aussies need to be careful of when visiting New Zealand is keeping safe on the slopes. If tourists are heading to a popular winter destination such as Queenstown, there’s more risk of an accident while skiing or snowboarding. Unfortunately some travellers don’t realise the typical travel insurance policy doesn’t always cover snowsports accidents, and having that extra safety net will give them the peace of mind they need in order to have the best possible trip. Here’s a handy guide on skiing in New Zealand.

And don’t forget that Aussie travellers can avoid hefty credit card fees by checking out their travel money options and travel insurance options.

The latest snow forecast is already predicting snowfall, with the South Island expected to get up to 2 centimetres in the next seven days. It seems that New Zealand is preparing for the influx of Aussie tourists expected to pay a visit for the ski season. Just make sure your customers know the risks of travelling to the snow. Simple changes like investing in ski insurance or altering their trip to visit quieter destinations can contribute to Aussies having the best possible trip.
