The top tweets and Insta snaps celebrating tourism

Aussies are renowned for being lovers of travelling the globe, both in our own backyard and on the other side of the world.

World Tourism Day yesterday sprung a lot of wanderlust discussions, with a key project being Helloworld’s #helloworldRELAY, which saw 60 countries profiled from sunrise to sunset via Instragram posts, some of which you can see below.

Joining in the party, Twitter wanted to celebrate and share the wanderlust of Twitter users that takes them around the world.

Everyday, people on Twitter talk about their dream holiday destinations and countries and places they’d like to visit. To find out which tourism spots Aussies talk about most on Twitter, the social media platform analysed the places that appear most frequently in Tweets related to tourism. Here’s what they found:

Australians dream countries to visit are:

  1. Japan
  2. England
  3. Brazil
  4. France
  5. Canada
  6. China
  7. Mexico
  8. Italy
  9. Germany
  10. Spain

The Aussie cities the locals Tweet most about wanting to visit are:

  1. Sydney
  2. Melbourne
  3. Perth
  4. Brisbane
  5. Adelaide

When Twitter looked at the destinations Aussies talk about most, the Great Barrier Reef came in as most mentioned. With images like these Tweeted, it’s no wonder why!

Day 2/7 – I’ve been fortunate enough to fly over the Barrier Reef a couple of times in the past but for this challenge I specifically wanted to get above the ‘river’ that runs between Hook and Hardy Reef. I was a little nervous the night before as I really didn’t have a strong plan B to allow for bad weather here. Keeping in mind for this challenge all my flights and everything were all pre-booked for the next week with no room for error, with the goal to get a shot at each location. Fortunately, in true Queensland style the sun came out in full force and the winds stayed right down. Being up particularly high in the chopper is critical for this shot as well as having doors off. Thankfully I had an epic pilot who was happy to hover all over the place for me to get the exact composition I was after. There is a small boat you can see in the frame which gives some scale and shows how large this beautiful reef is. Hi-res wallpaper can now be downloaded via my profile link. #EatWellGo @subway_australia

Of course, the rest of the world is also talking on Twitter about where they want to visit, so Twitter took a peek at their Aussie notes as well.

Here’s the Australian cities that the rest of the world are Tweeting about wanting to visit:

    1. Melbourne
    2. Sydney
    3. Brisbane
    4. Perth
    5. Adelaide

Twitter also analysed the most mentioned Aussie destinations in relation to tourism:

  1. Uluru
  2. Great Barrier Reef
  3. The Kimberly
  4. Hamilton Island
  5. Blue Mountains

Then of course there was the @helloworldau project that had inspiring Instagrammers post photos of their respective sunsets around the globe as part of the #helloworldRELAY. Check out a few choice snaps here:
