Aussies flock to Turkey ahead of ANZAC Day

Aussies are travelling to Turkey in droves for this year’s ANZAC Day.

According to new stats released from Skyscanner, the number of Aussies jetting off to Istanbul, Turkey for the 2015 services has doubled compared to the same period last year.

Travellers from Brisbane to Istanbul in April 2015 saw the biggest increase, with almost four times as many people looking to visit, compared to 2014.

But Sydneysiders keen on a Gallipoli getaway recorded the biggest number of travellers, with 37% of Aussies starting their journey in Sydney.

Melbourne came in close second to Sydney, with the Victorians making up 23% of the jetsetters to Istanbul, while Perth more than doubled its numbers from the same April period in 2014.

“Skyscanner’s data highlights the significant increase in proud Australians making the trip to Gallipoli,” Skyscanner’s head of marketing Oceania Alana Saphin-Polchleb said.

“This gives us a real sense of camaraderie across the country as we remember and honour the people who served in the war.”

And for those Aussies who can’t make the trip, Skyscanner has compiled a guide to some of the major 100th Anniversary ANZAC Day events in Australia and New Zealand.

From today, movement around the Gallipoli beachside area will be restricted, while organisers will ramp up security as the 10,000 Kiwis and Aussies who are attending the Dawn Service start arriving.

Australia’s Veterans’ Affairs Minister Senator Michael Ronaldson said he hoped the day would have a strong impact on the younger generations as well, according to AAP.

“I want the next generation of Australians and the generation after that to understand that the word Anzac is synonymous with service and sacrifice,” he said.

Prime ministers John Key and Tony Abbott, Prince Charles and Prince Harry will all be in Gallipoli for commemorative services this Friday afternoon.
