Carnival takes on Nine from 2019

Carnival Corporation will take on an increased share of ships on the high seas from 2019, with nine new ships to be added to the fleet.

Carnival Corporation & plc, has signed two strategic agreements that will add nine new cruise ships to the company’s fleet. Starting from 2019, the cruise ships will be added over a four year period until 2022, as part of the new agreement with shipbuilders Fincantieri and Meyer Werft.

As part of the agreements, Italian ship builder Fincantieri S.p.A and German shipbuilder Meyer Werft will oversee the nine new ships based on Carnival’s next-generation ship designs. The agreement is subject to several conditions, including satisfactory financing.

The new ships will target markets in North America and Europe as well as the newly developed cruise market in China.

“We’re excited to take this next step in our fleet enhancement plan,” Carnival Corporation ceo, Arnold Donald said.

Fincantieri will construct five ships at its shipyard in Monfalcone and Marghera, with ceo Giuseppe Bono saying the agreement will offer his company a “long-term strategic prospective”. Bono added the agreement was the “best reward” for the company’s dedication and commitment to hard work.

Meyer Werft will build four ships in its yards across Papenburg, Germany and Turku in Finland.

Additional ship orders are expected over the next decade.
