TransAsia cuts flights, pilots forced to retrain

TransAsia cuts flights, pilots forced to retrain

Taiwan’s regional TransAsia Airways has cancelled further flights as pilots were recalled for training following last week’s fatal crash, the second for the airline in seven months.

According to a report by AFP, the airline said 90 domestic flights would be cut, with another 32 facing cancellations by Tuesday, as pilots undergo retraining.

AFP reports a spokesperson for the airline said more domestic flights could face the axe if all its 71 ATR pilots were unable to be retrained in four days as scheduled.

On Friday the Civil Aeronautics Administration ordered pilots be retrained after reports surfaced that the pilots of the fatal crash last Wednesday may have shut off one of the engines.

Any pilot that fails the tests will be grounded immediately and indefinitely pending further training, the AFP reports.

40 people have been confirmed to have died, while three remain missing, after a TransAsia ATR 72-600 jet plunged into a river shortly after take-off from Taipei.

Investigators are still trying to establish what caused the crash; while some analysts are reported as saying the pilots may have caused it after turning off the wrong engine.
