Hull is the least romantic city in the UK

When you think of romance, you think of Paris, Rome, and at a stretch, even Las Vegas.

But one place that certainly doesn’t cross your mind is Hull in the UK, which has officially been deemed the least romantic city by one fifth of Brits.

Hotels.com has shared the results of its annual Destination Romance Report, which saw London take the top spot as the most romantic city in the UK, odd because 7% of the population actually voted it the least romantic spot as well.

Regardless of the split opinions on London’s romance rep, it still managed to steal the crown from last year’s winner, the Lake District, along with other contenders such as Cornwall, the Cotswolds and Edinburgh.

The report revealed that 18% of the nation pinned the UK’s capital as the best spot for a loved up getaway, with the Lake District close behind at 15%.

At the other end of the scale, Hull was picked by 19% of Brits to be the worst possible destination to take your special someone, which soared past Birmingham and Blackpool to take top spot.

Last year’s champion, Slough, was successful in its wooing in the past year, keeping well away from this year’s list and proving it still has a spot of chivalry in it.

Other new entries in this year’s least romantic report included Leicester, Glasgow and Coventry, who all featured in fifth place with 4% of the nation’s vote.

Hotels.com’s Carolina Annand said the report was a good way to gauge where lovers were taking romantic trips.

“With numerous new cities now featuring in both our lists, it is clear that those who previously held the top spot are working hard to prove they can be romantic too,” she said.

“Last year’s number one least romantic city, Slough, has been able to avoid the top ten list altogether this year – other locations need to show that romance can be found in the most unlikely of places as well!”

To give a bit of context, poor old Hull is an industrial city from way back, with its top attractions including jewellery-making classes and a tour of its industrial heritage.

And if this doesn’t make your loved one wriggle out of your clutches and run back down to London, you could always take them to the Humber Bridge for some fish and chips in the ten degree weather.
