Tourism can't wait for Bays delays

The Bays Precinct offers a prime opportunity to help grow the New South Wales tourism industry, with the visitor economy too important to ignore at the Bays Precinct International Symposium being held in Sydney, according to Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

Tourism is an economic development strategy for NSW and Australia, with travel bodies urging attendees of the symposium, which concludes today, to focus on tourism when discussing the future of the precinct.

“The Bays Precinct is a unique chance to revitalise a significant area of prime harbourside land on the doorstep of the CBD in an integrated way, with tourism at the forefront of thinking and planning for these sites,” TTF chief executive Margy Osmond said.

“The Bays Precinct includes sites like the Sydney Fish Market which is already a tourist drawcard and has the potential to become a world-class attraction that is on the itinerary of all visitors to Sydney. There are also opportunities for adaptive re-use of heritage buildings like the White Bay Power Station, which could become a cultural centre or art gallery and anchor that part of the precinct.”

TTF is attending the Bays Precinct International Symposium to ensure tourism is part of the precinct’s future, and that issues of access and connectivity are front and centre in discussions.

Osmond said, “We look forward to working with Urban Growth NSW, the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority and other stakeholders to achieve the best outcome for Sydney and the best outcome for the visitor economy.”
