Air Canada hits the ice for hockey finals
By admin

Melbourne's Icehouse staged The Australian Ice Hockey Leagues (AIHL) grand finals over the weekend with the national sponsor Air Canada having a major presence at the two-day event.

With the airline's famous maple leaf logo embedded in the centre of the rink, Melbourne Air Canada's sales executive Neil Westaway tossed the semi-final puck with the GM Australia Paul McLean presenting the Goodall Cup.

Australian ice hockey has been played competitively since 1909 with the Goodall Cup being the world's third oldest ice hockey trophy. Just like the Ashes, the original Goodall Cup is too delicate to travel and a replica is actually awarded to the league champion team. The Melbourne Mustangs were this year’s victors defeating their long-time rivals Melbourne Ice

Ice hockey is fast becoming a popular spectator sport in Australia with arena attendance exceeding 100,000 for the first time, whilst hundreds of thousands of people watched the matches on Fox Sports. AIHL commissioner Robert Bannerman explained this trend was due to “Air Canada’s sponsorship and support”.

Air Canada’s in-flight entertainment will feature this year’s final and the semi-final matches over the next two months.
