Spain entices Aussie youths with new visa

From running with the bulls to then running a bar, new work and holiday visa arrangements between Australia and Spain will give youth the chance to do both.

The reciprocal agreement was signed yesterday by Australia’s immigration minister Scott Morrison, allowing 500 young people from each country the chance to head overseas on a holiday and be allowed to work or study at the same time.

However, the new visa differs from a typical working holiday visa in that it requires applicants to have the support of their government, to possess or be studying towards tertiary-level qualifications, and to be able to speak functional English or Spanish as appropriate.

Morrison expects the new program will foster people-to-people links and boost the already close relationship between the two countries.

Deputy minister Michaelia Cash echoed Morrision, describing the agreement as "a testament to the constructive relationship between Spain and Australia, to the benefit of young adults seeking a unique cultural experience."

The two countries will work closely over the coming months to implement the necessary legal and administrative processes to begin offering the visa.
