Travellers still on alert as ash cloud moves west
By admin

Ash cloud emanating from Indonesian volcano Sangeang Api continues to affect services to Denpasar Airport in Bali, with travellers advised to check with their tour operator or airline before departure.

The volcano erupted on Friday, generating an ash cloud that drifted towards Australia, resulting in the closure of Darwin Airport which impacted air services across the country.

In total, 31 flights scheduled by Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Qantas were suspended over the weekend.

Flights in and out of Darwin resumed yesterday afternoon. However, the ash cloud continues to cause havoc as it moves west.

This morning Jetstar cancelled its return service between Perth and Denpasar, along with its Perth-Denpasar-Singapore return service. The airline will issue another update this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Virgin Australia confirmed its Denpasar services have resumed.

"We have made some minor scheduling changes for flights today and we have communicated these to customers," a spokesperson said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Smartraveller service warned of further disruptions to flights between Bali and Australian cities today.

“The plume has the potential to cause further disruption to commercial aviation in Indonesia and Australia in the coming days. Flights to other locations in the region could also be disrupted,” it said.

“You should check with your airline or tour operator for latest information on possible disruptions.”
