Get to know the island of Niue

Get to know the island of Niue
By admin

There's a tiny island in the South Pacific Ocean that's brimming with untapped treasures.

Niue, known simply as 'The Rock' to its 1400 inhabitants, is a tiny island in the South Pacific Ocean, 2,400km northeast of New Zealand.

It measures a mere 260 square kilometres – that's only 1.5 times the size of Disneyland.

Captain James Cook was the first to sight Niue in 1774, but never actually landed. Cook named it 'Savage Island' as legend has it the natives who greeted him were painted in blood.

But in reality, it was probably just the flesh of local red bananas.

Niue is one of the world's largest coral islands, and the only way to get there is to fly. Indeed, Air New Zealand is the only airline to service Niue, and does so just once each week.

The island is said to resemble a large chunk of Swiss cheese, because of its limestone rock formations dotted with hidden caverns and buried grottoes.

As Niue is made entirely of porous limestone, this means that rain quickly filters into the sea and visibility is crystal clear for up to 80 metres.

Thus Niue has some of the world's best diving, and is renowned for its underwater cathedrals, hidden chasms and curious marine life.
