Etihad initiative seeks to ensure inflight slumber
By admin

Improving sleep quality for its passengers has been highlighted as a priority for Etihad as it unveiled a new snooze-focused program.

The airline has been working with a panel of “sleep experts” from the American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology (ACPN) in Abu Dhabi since July 2012 to develop guidelines to enhance sleep inflight.

“A good night’s sleep is scientifically proven to benefit one’s health and nowhere is this more important than on a long-haul flight,” chief commercial officer Peter Baumgartner said.

“We understand that sleep is an important requirement for our guests, many of whom fly multiple journeys with us each year. For this reason, we will continue ensuring greater levels of comfort and wellbeing on our flights.”

The sleep initiative includes the introduction of luxury all-natural bedding by COCO-MAT in Diamond First Class. The exclusive multi-layered mattress is made from extracts of the Hevea tree – a natural rubber known for its elasticity and perforated with tiny holes to create a ventilation system that enables the material to breathe and regulate body temperature. New bedding set features a 100% cotton fitted sheet and a large down feather duvet and pillow.

Fine cotton Heather Grey sleepsuits, unique pillow mist, pulse point oil and a selection of Bergamote 22 toiletries by New York brand, Le Labo, will also become part of the First Class sleep amenities.

In Pearl Business Class and Coral Economy Class, passengers will be given “high quality” comforters, blankets, pillows.

Amenity kits will be provided in all classes as will noise cancellation headphones, with all cabins to feature mood-lighting and a “sleep-time beverage service” offering hot chocolate and herbal teas.

The measures aim to tackle each of the five senses in their quest to induce restful sleep.

“Etihad Airways approached us with the clear understanding that sleep is not just a luxury, but a physical necessity which affects every traveller on every level,” ACPN managing director Dr Yousef Abou Allaban said.

“We have worked closely with them to offer expert advice aimed at providing an optimum environment for sleep while flying, taking into consideration the challenges of modern travel.”
